HISTORY
Cefn Albion is a voluntary football club based in the village of Cefn Mawr, Wrexham in North Wales. At present the football club has two senior teams who both compete in the Welsh National League’s Premier Division (tier 3) and Reserves and Colts league respectively.Following a number of years without a lower ranked team within the village, a small group of people including Haydn Evans and Dean Morris, who had once themselves represented past Cefn teams felt the urge to give something back to the younger people of their generation. From this, in 2014, ‘Cefn Albion’ were established with the sole purpose of giving the local people another football club to be proud of.Put together using the local people, both on and off the field ‘the Albion’ began life in the North East Wales League, wales’ fifth footballing tier based in the Flintshire area. Playing their home games at the well renowned MUGA in the heart of the village, the Albion’s opening season could not have gone any better as they stormed to success, winning the title and four out of a possible five cups that were available. For their efforts the team were promoted to the Welsh National League Division One, wales’ fourth tier based in the Wrexham area. In 2014/15 Albion hit the ground running and went on to clinch back to back titles narrowly missing out on a league and cup double, loosing in the final. However, with the main objective of promotion to the Welsh National League Premier Division achieved the primary goal was achieved. The hard work was paying off and the Albion were making waves!Following a third successive promotion and the team now in Premier Division, other clubs were understandably taking note which resulted in the club losing a number of key players, as a result for 2016/17 season survival in the third tier was the main goal with a view to bringing through some of the younger players. Too often the club were witnessing talented local players travelling away from the village to play a game of football, so the committee made a bold decision to change that and together, focused hard on encouraging and helping more sixteen-year old’s transition from youth into adult’s football by announcing a reserve team. Cefn Albion Reserves were born. With an influx of young keen local players through the door, it turned out to be a good decision which has massively benefited the club today seeing several of those youngsters established in the first team squad. With a respectable ninth place finish secured, the goal of survival was achieved but the season’s main highlight was lifting the league cup in front of 500 spectators defeating league stalwarts FC Nomads 4-2 in the final at the Rock, expectations were exceeded and it marked a third successive season of picking up some silverware.Following the heroic 16/17 league cup success, the football club attracted the interest of some top local talent and with a couple of excellent signings mixed with the youngsters that were coming through the team headed into the 2017/18 in good shape. Also, in 2017, the club announced the exciting news that they had formed an official working partnership with their Welsh Premier League neighbours Cefn Druids with an impetus of growing stronger links between two local football clubs and between the people within the Cefn Mawr community. The initial agreement led to Cefn Albion’s first team initially playing nine WNLPD home games on the 3G at the rock but due to its success the agreement was soon extended resulting in the team completing the remainder of the 2017/18 season at their new surroundings. It became apparent to everyone at the football club the difference it made moving the first team to the 3G at the rock. During the season there was some fantastic free flowing football played and the team finished in a respectable fourth spot in a very competitive WNLPD. Despite Albion’s young reserves still occupying the MUGA they were also given the opportunity to play some of their fixture at the venue which was great for development and moral.
